Details of Experience:
At 62 years old, Frank arrived at The Monarch following hospitalization for severe back pain that had worsened due to prolonged wheelchair use while living in a shelter environment lacking proper accessibility equipment. As a bilateral above-knee amputee, he faced significant physical challenges and dependence with daily mobility.

Frank chose The Monarch with one clear goal: to rebuild his strength and work toward walking again through participation in the CareRite Amputee Walking School. Upon admission, Frank required total assistance for transfers and was unable to sit unsupported at the edge of the bed due to poor core strength and pain limitations. Although independent with wheelchair propulsion, he lacked the trunk stability necessary for safe repositioning and functional mobility.

Therapy initially focused on core strengthening, sitting balance, and transfer training to rebuild his physical foundation. Through consistent participation in therapy, Frank demonstrated measurable progress. His sitting tolerance improved from being unable to sit unsupported on admission to maintaining upright sitting balance for over 4 minutes independently. Improved trunk control and endurance also contributed to a significant reduction in back pain, allowing him to fully tolerate therapy sessions.

A major milestone in Frank’s recovery came when he achieved independent transfers between his bed and wheelchair, something he had never previously been able to perform safely on his own. This accomplishment restored confidence and independence while preparing him for prosthetic training. Frank has since been fitted for prosthetic stubbies and is actively preparing to begin standing and ambulation training.

Frank’s progress reflects the collaborative support of the interdisciplinary team at The Monarch. Nursing, therapy, social work, concierge, and administration worked together to provide both clinical care and encouragement throughout his stay. Coming from a challenging living environment, Frank found not only rehabilitation services but a community committed to helping him succeed.

Today, Frank continues to gain strength and independence. His journey from total dependence to independent transfers represents a meaningful step toward mobility, stability, and the ultimate goal of walking again.

All of us at The Monarch are honored to be part of Frank’s recovery and look forward to celebrating the milestones ahead.
